Theoretical understanding and observational findings on the life cycle of planetary nebulas (PNS) are reviewed. Various models for the birth of PNs, their dynamical characteristics, and the transition of the central star from red giant to white dwarf are summarized, and the present status of the models is given. The determination of the characteristics of the central star from those of teh PN is discussed.
