The geometry of the previous 30 apparitions of Halley's comet is approximated by plotting the position of Earth at the time when Halley's comet is at perihelion. This provides a reasonable guide to the "spectacularness" of the apparition. Five classes of apparition are recognized and these correlate both with the temporal position of the naked-eye observing period with respect to perihelion passage time and with the position of the path of the visible comet against the sky background.
