The observational properties of cosmic gamma-ray bursts are reviewed. There is evidence linking the "long" class of bursts to core-collapse supernovae at cosmological distances, but the origin of the "short" class is still a mystery. The energy spectra of bursts appear to form a continuum, from X-ray-rich bursts with almost no γ-rays, to hard spectrum bursts whose energy output is mainly in the several hundred keV range and above.
