The financial and political problems encountered in the development of the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) are reviewed. The various organizations which controlled British astronomy from 1955-1967, and their effect on the AAT project are described. The conflict between involvement in the European Southern Observatory or the AAT project is discussed. The proposed U.S. involvement with the U.K. or Australia in astronomy projects is examined. The Science Research Council's budgetary control of the AAT project is discussed.
