Results of detailed spectral mapping of the luminous blue variable Eta Car and the encircling Homunculus are presented. It is shown that the Homunculus is primarily a reflection nebula, although many intrinsic, low-excitation emission lines are also present. The Fe II and forbidden Fe II lines are considerably weaker in spectra of the lobes, and the equivalent width of the He I and H I emission lines is smaller in the lobes than the core. It is argued that what is being observed is the central source, not the forbidden Fe II emission, through an asymmetric dust distribution. Velocities of scattered and intrinsic emission lines constrain geometrical models of Eta Car. The absence of He II 4686 in the core imposes an upper limit of 30,000 K on the effective temperature of the central source.
