The contribution of fluorescent excitation to the degree of polarization in the vibration-rotation lines of molecular hydrogen is considered. Polarization occurs whenever the molecules are illuminated by an anisotropic flux of ultraviolet light and may be often attributed by mistake to Rayleigh scattering by dust grains of instrinsically unpolarized line emission. The typical degree of polarization due to fluorescence is estimated near 10 percent. Methods to distinguish between the contributions of Rayleigh scattering and fluorescence are described, including: (1) determination of whether sources of the vibration-rotation emission or ultraviolet light exist near the polarized flux; (2) comparison of the strengths of the infrared lines with those of the possible source; (3) similar comparisons of the line profiles; and (4), measurements of the degree of polarization of different lines for comparison with the pattern predicted theoretically for fluorescence.
