Black Hole And Neutron Star Binaries

Scientific paper

I will report on Chandra imaging observations of jets from galactic X-ray binary systems, notably SS 433 and 1E 1740.7-2942. In SS 433 we unexpectedly resolve an arcsecond-scale X-ray jet, aligned with the well-established radio jets, indicating ongoing dissipation of jet power well before the sites of the main jet-ISM interaction on arcminute scales. In the `great annihilator' 1E 1740.7-2942 we do not detect the arcmin-scale radio jets, allowing us to place limits on the magnetic field in the extended lobes. I will discuss how these and other observations can help to us constrain the power of these jets, fundamental for our understanding of their significance for the accretion process.
