The well known Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC1068 has recently been observed with XMM and Chandra. Here we report preliminary results obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on XMM-Newton and the Low Energy Transmission Grating on Chandra. The spectra are dominated by emissiom lines from hydrogen-and helium-like ions from carbon to silicon as well as contributions from iron L-shell transistions. Narrow radiative recombination continua of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, neon and magnesium are present, indicative of photoionised plasmas. The RRC's imly a strong low-temperature gas component. The LETGS is able to determine the spectrum of the core as well as from the nearby (4 arcsec) central emission region.
