The results of in-space and laboratory experiments studying beam-plasma interactions are discussed. The development of scaling laws which establish guidelines for parametric control of single-particle and collective beam-plasma interactions is described. The importance of current conservation, vehicle charging, and spacecraft sheath size in beam-plasma space experiments is analyzed. The relationship between the suprathermal electron distribution and the transition process from single-particle to collective beam-plasma behavior are studied. The need to identify the wave mode and processes of wave-particle interactions responsible for the transition and the influence of electrostatic plasma waves on the process are examined. The applications of single-particle characteristics to geomagnetic conjugate mapping and the measurement of magnetic-filled-aligned potential are described.
