A combination of IR transmission and reflectance spectroscopy was used to determine the real and imaginary parts of the 2.5-50-micron optical constants of chlorite and serpentine. It is noted that these optical constants should be useful in planetary and extra solar system studies for a better characterization of the nature of extraterrestrial silicates. A significnt result is the relatively small extinction coefficient in the 3-micron region, including the resonance, as compared with the 10-micron region.
