We wish to continue measuring CS (2--1) velocities toward a sample of southern infrared dark clouds (IRDCs). IRDCs are cold, dense molecular clouds that show significant opacity at mid-infrared wavelengths. We have found the kinematic distances to a sample of 312 northern IRDCs by measuring their 13CO velocities. With these distances we have established that IRDCs have typical sizes of ~4 pc and masses of a few 1000 solar masses, values typical of molecular clumps associated with young star clusters. Moreover, we have found that their northern distribution peaks at a Galactocentric radius of 5 kpc, coinciding with the Galaxy's dominant star forming structure, the 5 kpc ring. We now request 45 hours to continue our study of southern IRDCs. We already have measured CS velocities for ~70 southern IRDCs. We now wish to extend this sample to include an additional 232 southern IRDCs for a total of 300 southern IRDCs, a sample comparable in size to our northern IRDCs. The distances are crucial to determine whether the 5 kpc ring continues in the southern Milky Way.
