Recent observations of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the starburst M82 that have sufficient resolution to reveal the gas velocities within individual giant molecular clouds suggest that bound clusters are formed by shock compression of entire giant molecular clouds. In contrast, earlier observations of the starburst galaxy, the Antennae, suggested that bound clusters form by slow compression within super giant molecular clouds (SGMCs). We propose high angular resolution molecular line observations of a third starburst galaxy,M83, that will obtain the mass spectrum of the ISM, resolve the potential SGMCs, and obtain spectral line profiles from individual clouds that will be able to distinguish between these two hypotheses for cluster formation.
