The infrared spectrum of WL 16 contains strong CO first overtone emission bands, similar to those observed in the Becklin=-Neugebauer object (BN). Compared to BN, WL 16 is a relatively low-luminosity object, but the CO emission from both sources has similar properties. Under the assumptions discussed in the paper, the emitting CO has an excitation temperature of about 4200 K, a density of about 10 to the 12th per cu cm, and a radius of about 2 AU. The emission region has properties similar to the opacity gap region of the spherical protostellar models proposed in 1981 by Stahler, Shu, and Taam, although several other interpretations are also possible.
