Magnitudes for 12 variables have been measured on 364 photographic plates of M56 taken from 1935 through 1975 and on 54 B and 28 V plates taken from 1981 to 1984. Variables considered to be cluster members include two RR Lyrae stars for which periods have been determined, a BL Her star, an RV Tauri star, and three red variables. The variables that appear to be nonmembers of the cluster include three additional red variables, an RR Lyrae star, and a dwarf Cepheid. An apparent visual distance modulus of 15.56 is obtained from the two cluster RR Lyrae stars in good agreement with that obtained by other investigators from the magnitude of the horizontal branch. The long-term behavior of these variables was also investigated, particularly for the BL Her star V1, for which a period change of +3.5 days/million years was obtained, and for the RV Tauri star V6, which shows a number of reversals of primary and secondary minima but no period change.
