A full presentation and an analysis are given for large scale phoptographs of Comet Kohutek 1973 XII taken over January 9-25, 1974; these data are also compared with observations of other comets. It is noted that solar wind direction changes induce kinks in the comet tail; in addition, a kind of Rayleigh-Taylor instability that develops along tail sections which are not parallel to the solar wind flow shows up in the photographs as transverse waves when seen from the side, and as intensity modulations when seen from the front. This indicates their nature to be three-dimensional. Discrete tail disturbance effects are identified and related to solar wind disturbances and their solar sources.
