Sun's close proximity to the earth makes it easier to study the physics of the sun in great detail, which is not possible for other stars. The observations of the sun show that some of the phenomena, which occur in the solar atmosphere are challenging to the known laws of physics. In the present study, the attention is focused on the enigmatic eruptive solar phenomena and solar prominences. It is found that the dynamics of active regions, and sunspots play an important role in the triggering of flares and, also in the evolution of a prominence and its fine structure. Since solar flares generally occur near the neutral line of the opposite polarity sunspots, measurement of velocity fields in the regions of bipolar sunspots yielded interesting results.
