Based on the mathematical model of a nonlinear least squares problem with an equality constrain, the UVM2 method is introduced in preliminary orbit determination. It can be inferred from the principle of UVM2 that the 6 variables of r'0 and r'0 in the condition equations are essentially 5 dependent ones.To counter this characteristic of UVM2, the Total Least Squares method is introduced in preliminary orbit determination. It is shown that this method is effective from the simulation results and the real ones.
