New observations for 6300A emission of atomic oxygen in the extended neutral cloud and very near lo are discussed. New ground-based observations of Thomas for the cloud are compared with earlier observations of Brown. Model calculations are in progress to calculate an improved oxygen source rate at lo's exobase based upon an incomplete collisional cascade source distribution. New HST high spatial resolution image observations (Trauger et al.) indicate that the downstream plasma wake provides a spatial region of enhanced excitation for atomic oxygen in addition to that produced by the background plasma torus.
