This research program is directed towards the study of cometary outgassing using observations at optical wavelengths. Optical wavelengths provide access to both cometary continuum (dust) and emission lines (molecular and atomic gas) at subarcsecond resolution and with very high sensitivity (optical CCD detectors have near unit quantum efficiency). We exploit the observatories on Mauna Kea for this research: these possess a particularly fine complement of optical detectors. The second year was spent studying split comets, activity in distant comets, and near-infrared reflection spectra.
