Evidence for magnetic fields in very young stellar objects and large X-ray flares suggest a coronal/magnetospheric origin of protostellar X-rays, but an additional, significant source of X-ray emission may relate to the base of bipolar jets within a few tens of AU from the star, where the accelerating winds shock-ionize ambient material. This proposal aims at testing the hypothesis that part of the observed X-rays originate from strong shocks in these compact inner jet regions. This project will provide important diagnostics for the jet launching environment and its energetics.
