The physics of infrared detection is presented with emphasis on the electrical properties of semiconductors involved in photoconductors and photovoltaic and thermal detectors. Three types of multiplexed output circuits have been developed: the charge injection device (CID), the charge-coupled device (CCD), and the direct voltage readout (DVR). Their operation modes and peculiarities are analyzed in light of their application to large infrared detector arrays. To this end, two-dimensional arrays introduce a large multidetector gain over the earlier single-detector systems.
