A brief review of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and its potential in probing the local environment of solids is given, and the prospects of observing EXAFS in cosmic dust in situ is discussed. It is anticipated that suitable observations using the next generation of X-ray observatories could well reveal evidence of photoelectron emission in the solid state and thus throw light on the structure of interstellar grains.
