The behavior of the formation frequency of binary stars that will produce type I supernovae events in the solar neighborhood is studied. The type I supernova rate for several chemical compositions of the progenitor stars was computed using a chemical-evolution model. The relation between formation frequency and metallicity is examined and the predicted rate is compared to observational data. It is observed that the number of binary systems that produce type I supernovae is a decreasing function of their metal content and the predicted type I supernova rate is a factor of 10 lower than the observed rate.
