The Van Vleck Observatory on the campus of Wesleyan University in
Middletown, Connecticut, was built in the years 1914-16 upon the
disassociation of the departments of mathematics and astronomy. It was
named in memory of John Monroe Van Vleck, Professor of Natural Science
at Wesleyan throughout much of the nineteenth century....
