The purpose of practical work, its organization, and the presentation of teaching experiments in higher education, particularly for science-based astronomy courses are discussed. The problems of what should now be taught in view of the recent advances in the subject are considered. The roles of computers and simulators in teaching schemes are reviewed. The practical course at Glasgow University (Scotland) is presented with descriptions of exercises/experiments/projects.
