The origin of the stellar constellations familiar to western astronomers
from ancient times is discussed using astronomical, literary, and
archaeological evidence. The precession of the equinoxes, the zone of
avoidance and the orientation of the constellations, and early Greek and
Minoan astronomy are considered.
