Theoretical diffuse band profiles are calculated for grains containing resonantly absorbing impurity atoms or molecules and compared in detail with high-resolution observations. The theoretical profiles are based on the embedded cavity model of Purcell and Shapiro for the bulk dielectric constants of the composite grain material (host grain plus resonant impurities). The paper outlines the steps which are followed using the embedded cavity model to solve systematically for the values of the oscillator strength, concentration, and natural frequency of the resonant impurity absorbers which make a given host grain composition and size distribution explain an observed diffuse band, along with the required value of the column density of the host grains along the observed line of sight. The authors present a variety of theoretical band profiles, both for single grain types and for a distribution of grain types, in order to demonstrate the range of grain and impurity characteristics which yield a satisfactory fit to the varying absorption bands observed in the ρ Ophiuchi molecular cloud complex.
