The 39Ca(p, γ)40Sc reaction is investigated in a microscopic cluster model. Spectroscopic properties of 40Sc are calculated and tested from 40K properties, for which experimental data are available. The reaction rate is much larger than previously accepted, which arises from different proton widths of the 2-1 resonance in 40Sc. In a more general context, we draw attention to possible inaccuracies of the use of spectroscopic factors in nuclear astrophysics. Owing to strong differences between theoretical approaches, a direct measurement using a radioactive beam is desirable.
