The significance of the equipotential and equidensity surfaces in the construction of models of the mass distribution of self-gravitating systems is investigated. If the equipotential surfaces are specified, Poisson's equation can be used to determine the spatial density from the circular velocity. By specifying the equidensity surfaces, the kernel of the integral equation that relates the density to the circular velocity can be determined. The corresponding expressions for known models are obtained.
