New ΔS values (for the definition of S, see Preston, 1959) have been derived for 35 RR Lyrae stars in ω Centauri and Baade's Window. Intensities of a blend of lines near 4300 Å have also been estimated for the ω Centauri variables. Constraints are found that the less metal rich (ΔS > 5) RR Lyrae variables in ω Centauri are not Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB) stars but are the evolutionary descendants of blue ZAHB stars. This can account for the observed behaviour of the luminosity of RR Lyrae variables versus metallicity. The extension of this idea allows to identify a number of globular clusters in which the variables show properties which are representative of the Zero Age Horizontal Branch. This sample of globular clusters exhibits a dependence of ZAHB luminosity on metallicity which does not rule out the theoretical expectations. Metal rich RR Lyrae stars in Baade's Window are found to show the theoretically expected properties.
