Scientific paper

A sample of the 36 nearest galactic Cepheids was measured with the HIPPARCOS satellite and supplied us with high precision geometrical parallaxes and accurate photometric data. These data are tested against ground based observations and used to determine the first "geometrical" calibration of the period-luminosity relation for nearby Cepheids. This relation is used to determine the distance of the galaxy IC 4182 (μ = 28.23±0.07).
