Coherent HF radar returns from electron-density irregularities embedded in the equatorial electrojet have been used to measure electric fields in the equatorial ionosphere and study plasma instabilities at the origin of the irregularities. It is shown that strong anomalous reversals of the equatorial electrojet are sometimes observed and that quasi-horizontal plasma waves have been detected during such an event. The experimental results are considered in the light of ray tracing of radio-wave propagation for the conditions prevailing in the E layer at the time of the observations.
