It is proposed that the Crab nebula was produced by the explosion of a helium star in a close binary already containing a neutron star. It is suggested that the explosion was caused by a complete spiralling of the neutron star into the helium star, and that the helium star was totally disrupted. In accordance with this hypothesis, the neutron star, identified with PSR 0532, would have been spun up in the process.
