Recent observations of extragalactic and galactic gamma rays are reviewed. It is suggested that a superposition of individual sources might explain the diffuse gamma-ray background, and a list of 24 point sources is provided. It is noted that four pulsars, including the Crab and Vela pulsars, have been identified as discrete gamma-ray sources, that all four exhibit double maxima with a phase separation of 0.4, although their energy spectra are different, and that the emission from the Crab and Vela pulsars is compatible with its being entirely pulsed. Models of galactic gamma-ray emissivity are discussed, and it is proposed that the spatial distribution of localized gamma-ray sources closely resembles that of O stars. The relative importance of point sources and diffuse emission is considered.
