UBV observations of eight southern Seyfert galaxies and five selected emission-line galaxies have been taken over 3 yr. For the Seyfert galaxies it was found that the amplitude of light variation increased at shorter wavelengths, and that the variations show repetition on time-scales varying from 20 day for NGC3783, up to 1 yr and longer for NGC 1566. Seyferts with the bluest nuclei have the shortest time-scales of variation. Evidence is presented to add to that already existing which suggests that the objects in the nuclei of Seyferts are under-luminous quasars. The observations of the emission-line galaxies do not suggest that they are less energetic counterparts of Seyfert galaxies, occupying a position intermediate between the Seyferts and normal spiral galaxies.
