The Local Group (LG) is described in an overview of its properties, components, and use in the study of dark galaxy dynamics and the dark matter gravitational components. The members of the LG are described emphasizing the dominant M31 and M33 spiral galaxies and the faint ellipticals that surround the Milky Way. The LG is argued to serve as a good foundation for studying the distribution of galactic light and mass with attention given to the work of Oort, Gilmore et al., and Zwicky. Star formation can be studied by means of evaluating the tidal interactions between the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way. Dwarf objects exist in the LG with very high mass/light ratios giving evidence of dark matter in galaxies, and more evidence is provided by the rotation curves of spirals. The LG is shown to be a good observational laboratory for testing most aspects of theoretical cosmology.
