The J(K-1 K1) = 3(12) - 2(11) transition of interstellar formaldehyde has been detected from the S140 molecular cloud and the Orion Molecular Cloud. Because excitation of this transition requires high densities, it provides a good test of models of formaldehyde excitation based on more easily excited lines. The line strength in the S140 molecular cloud is in excellent agreement with that predicted from detailed models of that cloud. The line from the Orion Molecular Cloud, together with other observational and theoretical results, forces a reexamination of earlier models. A model with small condensations having an angular size of about 25 arcsec and density of the order of 1 million per cu cm provides the best explanation of the data. The consequences of such a model for abundances and isotope ratios are discussed.
