The primary objectives of the Cassini mission for the study of Titan are summarized, and the scientific functions of the Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument (HASI) are identified. The current knowledge of the atmosphere and the surface of Titan is summarized. It is then shown in what way the HASI multisensor package may contribute to the understanding of Titan.
