The main tasks of the radar system included in the payload of the Cassini mission are to estimate the composition of the surface and the subsurface where possible, estimate the elevation profile of the surface, and estimate the ocean depth (if any). Here, some hypotheses about the composition of the Titan atmosphere and surface are examined. An analytical model accounting for surface backscattering, valid for a Beam Limited Radar Altimeter, is then discussed with reference to smooth and rough surfaces.
