The large improvements in image sensitivity and calibration made possible by the VLBA have ushered in a new era in high-angular resolution radio surveys. Previously limited to detailed observations of a handful of select AGN, the VLBI technique is now being used for large statistical studies of parsec-scale AGN jets. Here I discuss two large VLBA surveys: the MOJAVE program, and its predecessor, the 2 cm VLBA Survey. Among their findings, these longterm monitoring campaigns have confirmed that high-Lorentz factor flows are rare in the blazar parent population, and that the properties of these outflows are connected with the AGN broad line region.
