Magnetic Fields: Particle Propagation

Scientific paper

Using the magnetic coordinates, the general expression for the drift Hamiltonian is considered. The relevant curvilinear coordinates are formed by the Euler potentials and the third complementary parameter. It is shown that the concrete form of the drift Hamiltonian depends on the choice of the third parameter. The geometric shape of the adiabatic zone in the dipole is found, where the applicability of the drift Hamiltonian for the description of charged particle motion is mostly appropriate. The motion of particles with zero equatorial pitch-angles is considered when the drift approximation can not be applied. The mirroring latitudes of such particles are obtained.
