Extra-Solar Planets: Evaporation
Scientific paper
The basic principles of atmospheric thermal escape are presented and illustrated through some of the effects of evaporation on the long-term evolution of planetary atmospheres, including: - the erosion of the water reservoir on habitable planets, - the composition of Earth's early atmosphere, - evolution and influence of stellar XUV emission on evaporation, - the stability of planetary atmosphere in the habitable zone of low-mass stars, - the thermal evaporation of Hot Jupiters and the origin of Hot Neptunes.
