SONYC is a comprehensive project to establish the census of brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects in nearby star forming regions. Our goal is to identify all young substellar objects down to a few Jupiter masses (~ 0.005Msun), i.e., the opacity limit for fragmentation. In the framework of SONYC, we have surveyed four star forming regions (NGC 1333, ρ Oph, Chamaeleon-I, Lupus-III). Lupus-III was observed in 2010A at CTIO in I-, J- and K-bands, using MOSAIC and NEWFIRM. The observed region is extremely crowded, and our analysis results in an extensive catalog of substellar candidates that need to be confirmed spectroscopically. Consequently, the spectroscopic follow-up in Lupus-III represents a challenging task. We propose to map the same region with two methane-sensitive filters (H1, H2) at NEWFIRM. These observations, in combination with Spitzer data, will help us to select initial samples for spectroscopic follow-up. The final results will be compared with our findings in other regions, specifically to address the following questions: 1) How abundant are BDs and PMOs in comparison with stars? 2) How does the environment affect the bottom end of the Initial Mass Function? Lupus is an excellent test case and will provide new constraints for brown dwarf formation scenarios.
