Anomalies in the apparent profile of Venus suggestive of great differences in level were first remarked by Fontana (1643) and Burratini (1666) each of whom spoke of a raggedness or lack of uniformity in the line of the terminator. When Phillipe de la Hire repeated the observation in 1700 the Paris Academy concluded the planet had 'Montagnes beaucoup plus grandes que celles de la Lune, qui le font plus à proportion que celles de la Terre.' ('Many mountains far higher than those of the Moon, and greater in proportion than those of the Earth').
