Scientific paper

Basic concepts of magnetic reconnection are illustrated and the
importance of this process in space is discussed. An outline of theories
presently pursued is given. Applications of such theories to two
explosive phenomena, which involve magnetic merging, namely, the solar
flares and the earth's magnetic substorms, are discussed.
