The variational principle of nonequilibrium thermodynamics is applied to a collisionless plasma, and a self-consistent equation of a thermodynamically nonequilibrium plasma is discussed. It is shown that the obtained plasma state equations describe all the transport processes in the earth magnetosphere, including adiabatic pull-in and scattering, conditioned by instability. This thermodynamic approach can also be used to describe transport processes in the magnetospheres of other planets in the solar system and to study the flow of solar wind past planetary atmospheres.
