Tunable infrared lasers, which have applications as local oscillators in high sensitivity heterodyne detection of weak astronomical signals, are described. Semiconductor diode, high pressure gas, 3- and 4-wave mixing, optical parametric oscillator and solid state F-center laser systems are reviewed; continuous wave spin flip laser systems, of special interest to high resolution astronomy, are given particular attention. The discussion focuses on the design of a spin flip laser spectrometer, the use of anti-reflection coated cavities for linearized tuning of a continuous wave spin flip laser, and external cavity operation of the spin flip laser, in which resonator optics are separate from the active medium.
