Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (FTS) in the far infrared is discussed, with emphasis on systems employing a Michelson interferometer in which two beams obtained by amplitude division are recombined after introduction of a relative phase delay. Throughput limitations and multiplex advantages of Michelson and Fabry-Perot interferometer systems are considered; the problem of source intensity fluctuations, which may be counteracted by phase modulation or rapid scanning, is also mentioned. Several FTS systems based on rapid scanning interferometers are described, including the system designed for use on the NASA Gerard P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory.
