Present understanding of SN 1987A is discussed. The evolution of the progenitor star up to the supernova stage is described, and the reasons for the unusual character of the light curve are considered. Based on the supernova spectra, the chemical makeup of the supernova and the reasons for its departure from spherical symmetry are addressed. The supernova explosion mechanism is examined, including the energy source.
