The William Herschel Telescope (WHT) located on the peak of La Palma in the Canary Islands deserves to be considered among the best ground-based optical telescopes in the world. Noted are, its optical excellence, the mechanical quality of the mounting and drive, and finally, its observing site offers dark skies and dry, steady air. The primary mirror of 4.2 meters in diameter is the third-largest single-mirror telescope in the world. Thinner than most large mirrors, its ratio of diameter to thickness is eight. It is supported on 60 air pads that act as pneumatic springs. The principal optical configurations of the WHT consist of the f/11 Cassegrain focus used for conventional spectrographs and cameras, and the twin f/11 focusses used for large instruments, too heavy to be mounted at the Cassegrain focus.
